Sonji René Mims Adams was born on February 26, 1966, to the late Rev. Silas Mims and Sis. Dorothy Sherman Mims Gantt. She was the devoted wife of Rev. Aaron Curtis Adams, Jr. for 42 years. Together, they were blessed with three children: Jasmine, Patrice, and Avery.

Mrs. Adams went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 29, 2026.

Sonji served faithfully as First Lady of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, where her husband pastored. She also served alongside her husband at Christian Life Church, where he served as Assistant Pastor. Sonji was an incredible soldier, fighter, organizer, supporter, leader, entrepreneur, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, family member, friend, and community servant.

She was a woman of vision, purpose, and action. Sonji was instrumental in organizing and supporting numerous community and faith-based initiatives, including MLK Dream Weekend, 107 Days of Nonviolence, Spiritfest Southeast Region, and many other events and programs that touched countless lives.

Sonji was full of life and determination. Even while facing persistent health challenges, she continued to serve others with strength, grace, and perseverance. For more than 20 years, she faithfully served as Executive Assistant for Valley Brook Outreach Baptist Church, where her professionalism, organizational skills, and spirit of excellence were deeply valued.

Sonji possessed an exceptional professional and business mind. She was a gifted organizer and a natural leader who approached every responsibility with excellence. Yet, beyond her many accomplishments, those who knew and loved her will remember most her joyful spirit, her unwavering faith, and her love for the Lord.

Her love for God and her joyful presence could be heard in the songs she led with the choir, including “Oh, How Precious Is the Name of Jesus,” as well as in her powerful testimony, “The Goodness of God.” Through her words, her service, and her life, Sonji continually reminded others of God's faithfulness and goodness.

Left to cherish Sonji’s precious memories are her devoted husband, Rev. Aaron Curtis Adams, Jr.; her children, Patrice René Adams and Avery Scott (Jermaine) Adams; and her grandchildren, Jade Simoñe Gallashaw Adams and Jaaron Guy Gallashaw Adams.

She is also lovingly remembered by her four siblings: Dorothy Jean (Johnny) Mims Earle, Deborah Faye Mims Walton, Gwendolyn Elaine Mims, and Silas Henry Demetrius (Shawana) Mims; her mother-in-law, Sis. Mable Adams; two sisters-in-law, Sophia Adams and Stephanie Althea Adams; and one brother-in-law, Fabian Adams, along with a host of other relatives, friends, church family, and community members who were blessed to know and love her.

Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Silas Mims and Sis. Dorothy Sherman Mims Gantt, and her beloved daughter, Jasmine Alicia Adams.

Sonji Rene Mims Adams leaves behind a legacy of faith, strength, service, excellence, love, and perseverance. Her life was a testimony of what it means to serve God and others with purpose. Her presence brought joy, her leadership inspired others, and her love touched many lives.

Though she will be deeply missed, her family and loved ones find comfort in knowing that her earthly journey is complete and that she is now resting in the presence of the Lord whom she loved and served so faithfully.

The family welcomes visitation at the home, 128 Fourth Day St, Piedmont SC 29673 between the hours of 4pm – 8pm daily.

Funeral Services: Saturday September 5, 2026, 12:00PM, at Valley Brook Outreach Baptist Church, with interment in Shoals Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
