Wilma E. Johnson

(June 11, 1942 – November 7, 2025)

Wilma E. Johnson, who was lovingly called “Ms. J”, “Ms. Wilma”, or “Mama” by her children and by those who knew her in her days of retirement in South Carolina, she departed her loving family on Friday, November, 7, 2025. Wilma was born in Pineland, Texas, on June 11, 1942, to Jestine Murphy and Herbert Gibson.

In the mid-1960s, Wilma moved from the small town of Pineland, Texas, to San Diego, California, with the hopes of exposing them to life experiences she could never have imagined. As a single mother of 4, Wilma raised her children in a warm, diverse, and family-oriented community in San Diego, Linda Vista, known as “The V”. She worked as an Electronic Assembler to provide for her family, and in doing so, had a pure and giving heart to anyone who entered her home. Wilma enjoyed cooking dinners and socializing with family and friends, sharing words of wisdom and love. In her later years, Wilma could be found sitting on the back porch of her retirement home in Greenville, SC, working on word search puzzle books, telling witty stories, watching the deer frolic across the backyard, and watching the pine trees sway in the wind, all while being her entertaining and feisty self.

Wilma is survived by one daughter, Chriselda (Robert) Cuyar, of Greenville, SC; three sons, Alonzo M. Johnson, of Pineland, TX; Frederick D. Johnson, of San Diego, CA; and Darren E. Ferguson, of Reno, NV; one sister, Quintana Onubogu, of Watauga, TX; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a host nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorial Services will be held at Redemption Church, 315 Roe Rd., Greenville, SC 29611, on Monday, December 8, 2025, at 4:00 PM. Wilma was an avid supporter of St. Jude's Children’s Research Hospital, founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas. Instead of flowers, please donate to St. Jude’s (“Finding cures. Saving Children”) in Wilma’s name.
