Mrs. Odessa Peterson Johnson

April 26, 1939 — April 21, 2026

Modesto, California

Odessa Peterson-Johnson, a cherished pillar of Modesto, California, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 21, 2026, in Los Angeles, California. For more than 50 years, she called Modesto home — and in that time, she left an indelible mark on every corner of the community she loved so deeply.

Odessa was born in 1939 in Greenville, South Carolina, to pioneering, entrepreneurial parents who instilled in her three unshakeable values from an early age: the importance of education, the call to community service, and the foundation of faith. Those values, rooted in her South Carolina upbringing, would go on to define everything she touched. She carried Greenville with her always — its grit, its grace, and its belief that hard work in service of others is a life well lived.

A gifted and driven student, Odessa went on to attend Tennessee State University, where she graduated magna cum laude— a testament to the intellectual excellence her family had always championed. It was during her university years that she became a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, a sisterhood whose founding principles of scholarship, service, and social action aligned perfectly with the woman she was becoming. She carried that bond of sisterhood with her for the rest of her life. She followed her Bachelor’s degree with a Masters in Business Education at Columbia University.

With her degrees in hand and a profound sense of purpose, she set her sights westward, eventually putting down roots in Modesto, California, the city she would call home for more than half a century.

Her professional legacy is nothing short of historic. In 1962, Odessa made history as the first African-American educator at Modesto High School — a trailblazing achievement that cracked open doors for generations of students and teachers who came after her. That milestone was only the beginning. She was the first Black College Counselor at Modesto Junior College in 1970. She went on to serve as Dean of Community Education at Modesto Junior College, spent 20 years as a Modesto City Schools Board Member, and 12 years as a University of California Regent — positions of influence she held not for personal gain, but in tireless service to others. At every level, she used her voice and her platform to fight for equity, access, and excellence in education.

Odessa was, at her core, a civil rights leader. She understood that progress is not given — it is built, brick by brick, through courage, persistence, and love for those who come after you. Her contributions to Modesto and beyond were not fleeting acts of service; they were the architecture of a more just community, and they will endure long after her passing.

Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. A devoted member of Second Baptist Church. Odessa served others selflessly and led by example. She believed deeply in the power of community and gave generously of her time, talent, and spirit to those around her.

In her personal life, nothing brought Odessa greater joy than her family. She cherished her daughter Sylvia, her son-in-law Allen, and her three beloved grandchildren, Spencer, Alaina, and Skylar who were the light of her life and the living testament to the legacy she worked so hard to build. She poured into them the same love, wisdom, and expectation of excellence that her own parents had given her, and in them, her spirit will continue to shine.

She is survived by her daughter Sylvia, son-in-law Allen Wilson, and grandchildren Spencer, Alaina, and Skylar. She was preceded in death by her brother, Ernest Odell Peterson and her parents Richard and Silvere Peterson. A graveside service will be at Resthaven Cemetery on Sunday, May 3rd. A celebration of her life will be held on May 30th in Modesto at the Modesto Junior College at the Modesto Junior College Auditorium after a reception in the MJC Art Gallery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Odessa Peterson-Johnson — educator, trailblazer, civil rights leader, Delta Sigma Theta Soror, devoted grandmother, and beloved community mother. Modesto is forever better because of her. May she rest in eternal
